Don't miss this unique opportunity to explore the prehistory and history of this region recently designated as Bears Ears National Monument. Learn about protection initiatives, research and recent findings from the Comb Ridge Heritage Initiative Project. Winston served as Principal Investigator for the Project; having grown up in the area, Winston shares various viewpoints and the complexities around protecting sites and antiquities. Sally J. Cole is a well known rock art scholar with extensive work in Grand Gulch and in other Cedar Mesa locales over the past 30 years. Her current work focuses on Basketmaker II iconography in rock art and material culture and architectural murals of the Pueblo II-Pueblo III era. She recently contributed scholarly work to the fabulous new interpretive displays at the BLM Kane Gulch Ranger Station.
We include routes we have used in previous years and also allow for "faculty choice" each year and day, depending on the weather and the group. Three nights lodging double occupancy, most all meals and field trip permits and transportation are included.

Backcountry hiking with llama support in the Lizard Head Wilderness of Colorado
Explore the headwaters of the Dolores River on the eastern edge of the Colorado Plateau. This trip is perfect for summer and takes place in the lovely high country of the Lizard Head Wilderness in the San Miguel Mountains section of the Colorado Rockies. Enjoy wildflower meadows, views of high peaks, an alpine lake, and waterfalls on day hikes from our base camp along the West Fork of the Dolores. We reach base camp just a four miles on the first day with llamas carrying our kitchen, food and camping gear. Our small congenial group led will be led by a CFI Naturalist and Redwood Llama wrangler who will share much about the natural and cultural history of the area. Our Naturalist Guides are the best and most knowledgeable in the Moab, specializing in Professor Valley/Fisher Towers geology, history, river ecology, animal lore and more. Families are welcome (minimum of 6 years of age). Our guides are particularly great with kids since we work with many youth groups throughout the season.
