Leave your tent and camp kitchen at home and enjoy a weekend camping in tipis and outdoor-focused educational activities with your family! In this inspiring program, your family will explore the Colorado Plateau at Professor Valley Field Camp. Our primitive camp offers a unique rustic camping experience your family is sure to enjoy. Family Adventure Weekend is engaging for families experiencing the Colorado Plateau for the first time and seasoned explores of the region alike. Our Naturalist-Guides specialize in youth outdoor education and are excited to share their knowledge through engaging activities, hikes, and rafting.
Arrive late morning and settle into your tipis, then meet for camp orientation and delicious lunch. During the first-day naturalists guide families on an uplands hike, interpreting native plants and fantastic geology, and end at a petroglyph panel overlooking the valley. We will also enjoy nature games and art projects close to camp. After dinner, families gather around a campfire beneath a swath of the Milky Way for star talks and Native myths. As the fire dwindles and eyes become heavy, make your way to bed sharing one of our Lakota style tipis with your family. We can fit up to five comfortable cots in each earth floored tipi.
The next day we will great the morning with breakfast and discussion of the day’s events. We will leave Professor Valley Field Camp and head upriver to our launch site on the Colorado River. After our licensed whitewater river captain checks all our lifejackets we will launch downriver running through a half-dozen rapids. Along the way keep your eyes open for the many critters that call the rivers riparian environment home. Our Naturalists will point out the many features along the way and provide more exciting activities alongside lunch.
Our program ends mid-afternoon when we land our boats at the takeout.
