Community Builders Lesson
Community Builders is a hands-on lesson that explores what it means to be connected to
land. This activity highlights the importance telling one’s own story and how Indigenous
groups have often been denied that opportunity.
This activity is designed to give kids (and adults!) a chance to use natural materials to build aspects of their own communities, and to use these projects as a tool for opening up about themselves and their personal histories.

CFI is a nonprofit.
Thanks to donors and members, the Canyonlands Field Institute is able to provide free curriculum and resources.

CFI supports outdoor professionals.
Thanks to members, CFI provides paid training, free housing, free Wilderness First Responder and Swiftwater Rescue certs, and any gear necessary to do the job.

CFI gets kids outside.
By offering unplugged outdoor experiences for kids historically excluded from the outdoors, CFI creates scientists, stewards, artists, and advocates from all backgrounds.

CFI creates the next generation of river runners.
The Native Teen Guide in Training is a free, indigenous-led professional development program for native teens to develop experience in the outdoor industry.
If you benefited from these resources, consider donating to CFI so that we can continue to provide lifechanging outdoor experiences… because every kid deserves to be outside.
